At WHYoga-PT the Physical Therapy client is viewed as an individual and is evaluated using a ‘whole body’ approach. Ginny assesses the entire physical body, not just the injured extremity or part. In addition, Ginny acknowledges the role that the mind and spirit can play in impacting the body’s natural healing process. Physical Therapy is provided in a private and peaceful setting; Ginny is one on one with her client throughout the entire treatment session. Along with traditional therapeutic procedures such as Therapeutic Exercises and Neuro-Muscular Re-education, Ginny includes Myofascial Release (MFR – the John Barnes Approach), and Breath Work in her treatments.

Myofascial Release is a PT manual therapy (hands on) technique. The technique applies gentle, sustained pressure into a body region to reach the deeper connective tissues, the fascia.* Fascia runs throughout the body, from head to toe, like a spider web. Fascial restrictions, the binding down of the fascia, can occur from trauma (ie. surgery, falls, car accident), emotional trauma, inflammation and/or habitual poor postural alignment. These fascial restrictions impact the pain sensitive structures in the body (including nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures and/or organs) with tensile forces of up to 2000#/square inch! However, many of the diagnostic tests (ie X-rays, CAT scans) do not show fascial restrictions; they manifest in decreased range of motion, pain and postural misalignment. Therefore, releasing the restrictions through the manual therapy using MFR reduces pain and increases blood flow to that region of the body for healing to take place. The ‘whole body’ is brought into balance. Ginny includes in her PT treatment session, as part of the home exercise program, MFR self-treatment techniques.

Breath work is also assessed during a PT evaluation/treatment session. Frequently Ginny encounters a faulty breathing pattern, especially in those who have been in chronic pain. Re-education of proper breathing, along with techniques for controlling the breath, helps the client to be calmer and less stressed. Being in the para-sympathetic or relaxation state rather than sympathetic or fight or fright state allows healing to take place.
